Improving Climate Change Resilience Using Smart Technology

08/09/2026

Our Co Founder Eur Ing Brian M Back is delighted to be returning to the Channel Islands on 16th and 17th September as the guest speaker for the Channel Islands Group of Professional Engineers (CIGPE).

He will be presenting:

“Improving Climate Change Resilience Using Smart Technology”

📍 Guernsey — Wednesday 16 September 2026, 7.00pm, Les Cotils

📍 Jersey — Thursday 17 September 2026, 6.00pm, Jersey Museum

Climate change presents some formidable challenges, but engineering also gives us many of the tools with which to respond.

His talk will look at practical examples of how smart monitoring, sensors, telemetry, remote cameras, real-time data and intelligent control can help us make our existing infrastructure more resilient — from managing flooding and water resources to reducing pollution and improving the way we operate critical infrastructure.

A particularly important message will be that climate resilience does not always mean replacing infrastructure. Sometimes the most sustainable, affordable and achievable solution is to make the infrastructure we already have smarter, more observable and more responsive.

He is also particularly pleased to be attending in my capacity as Senior Warden of the Worshipful Company of Engineers, one of the City of London Livery Companies. The Company brings together engineers from across the profession and works to advance engineering for the benefit of society, promote engineering education and support the development of engineers. Through the Engineers Trust it also provides more than £100,000 each year in awards and prizes, primarily supporting younger engineers including those serving in the armed forces.

GIGPE promotes and supports professional engineering, encourages continuing professional development, invests in future engineers and brings specialist engineering speakers to both Jersey and Guernsey. Importantly, its membership and events are open to everyone, regardless of professional qualification or career.

The events are FREE TO ATTEND and open to all, so whether you are an engineer, student, business leader, environmental professional, policymaker, or simply interested in how technology can help us respond to climate change, I hope you will come along.

He is also pleased to announce that the radio Data Networks Limited will be sponsoring these two events and helping make these conversations about engineering, technology and climate resilience possible.

Please share this with colleagues, students and anyone in Jersey or Guernsey who might be interested. It would be great to see a full house on both islands.
