Radio Data Networks Launches Real-Time Telemetry Solution to Transform CSO and Storm Overflow Monitoring – UMON3

14/03/2026

The Innovation Farm, Press Office, UK

Radio Data Networks Limited (RDN) has unveiled its advanced real-time telemetry-based EDM monitoring system for Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) and storm bypass channels, delivering high‑resolution two‑minute reporting that goes beyond regulatory compliance.

Operating on RDN’s exclusive Ofcom‑licensed radio network, the system provides utilities with reliable, cell phone independent, continuous level data while also enabling proactive network management. By creating a virtual smart network, the technology can help operators prevent overflow spills before they occur by enabling control of upstream assets such as pumping stations, flow regulators, and diversion weirs.

With environmental penalties for pollution incidents now reaching an all-time high, RDN’s solution offers water companies an alternative to autopsy spill reports and fines. In the right location the investment could effectively pay for itself within weeks through spill reductions or eliminations, we could trigger further savings by eliminating the need to invest in section 82 water quality monitors.

The system works by transmitting the 4–20 mA level signal derived from an in‑chamber level sensor, such as the VEGAPULS C21 or C22 radar, to a local telemetry receiver such as the RDNET1000 Gateway. These signals can then be replicated into a telemetry outstation or control system, including controllers such as the VEGA MET, which can also log the data too.

Using programmable trip levels, the VEGA MET controller or telemetry outstation can proactively trigger operational responses. For example, it can inhibit a pumping station, or activate the closing of a wastewater flow regulator, such as those manufactured by RDN, preventing a potential spill event before it occurs.

Beyond the water sector, the technology also supports industrial flow monitoring applications, enabling organisations to obtain MCERTS on discharge and understand flow patterns in real time. For example, the system has been used to capture live flow profiles during large public events such as the Six Nations Rugby Championship.

By combining licensed radio telemetry, real‑time monitoring, and automated control capability, Radio Data Networks is helping utilities and industry operators move from reactive compliance to proactive environmental protection.
